About the Marconi OMS840 Multiservice Edge

The Marconi OMS 840 Multi-Service edge is a compact single rack unit service edge produced by British telecoms company, Marconi. The Marconi OMS 840 could be used as a multiservice edge switch to bridge the gap between traditional TDM services and Ethernet offerings. This allowed businesses to deploy both simultaneously, therefore catering for a large range of customer requirements.

Equipped with TDM interfaces, including 2 Mbit/s (E1 balanced and unbalanced) interfaces as well as 4 x Fast Ethernet ports, the OMS840 enabled businesses to support legacy services like TDM and PBX connections, whilst also supporting Ethernet Private Line (EPL) and dynamic multipoint Ethernet services like Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL), Internet/IP Access, and EVPLAN/VPN.

The Marconi OMS840 also offered a small degree of scalability using STM-1 or 4 SFPs (Small Form Pluggable) modules. This allowed businesses that deployed this platform the option to increase their bandwidth to support their growing network requirements without the need for a costly upgrade.

The OMS840 utilised Ethernet connectivity with its wirespeed Ethernet interfaces, including 10Base-T and 100Base-Tx Ethernet interfaces. This wide range of interfaces enabled businesses to deploy various Ethernet-based applications and services, ensuring maximum versatility.

The OMS840 was a cost-effective solution that eliminated the need for separate general-purpose routers or LAN switches on the business premises. Through Ethernet-to-SDH conversion at the transport layer (via GFP – Generic Framing Procedure), the OMS840 was able to transport Ethernet frames across the SDH network helping to streamline the network architecture whilst keeping costs down.

The OMS840 also featured a management platform that gave network operators a host of Ethernet domain statistics allowing them to monitor, manage and optimise their networks efficiently with detailed visibility into Ethernet traffic.

In 2005 Marconi was purchased by Swedish telecoms company Ericsson. After this point hardware and software support for the Marconi OMS840 was stopped. TXO is still able to service and repair existing Marconi Network equipment, as well as source replacement components. Repair capability for the Marconi OMS840

As part of the TXO mission to support the circular economy and to help minimise the environmental impact of telecoms across the supply chain, we offer an extensive and comprehensive third-party repair service that focuses on lifecycle management across a wide range of products and components for the Marconi OMS840 Multiservice Edge as well as other Marconi networking equipment.

Based out of our advanced engineering facilities in Solihull, our team of experienced system engineers have an in-depth knowledge of core telecom repairs including optical, IP and radio based technologies at circuit board level and conduct approximately 12,000 repairs each year. This ensures the businesses we work with can maintain optimum service levels and minimise disruption to their network. At TXO we are able to refurbish and restore many components for the Marconi OMS840 Multiservice Edge alongside many others from the wider Marconi range.

To help ensure the longevity of the repairs we carry out and the overall life of your Marconi OMS840 Multiservice Edge, we will often conduct several pre-emptive repairs as part of the service we offer. By reconditioning and repairing parts that are susceptible to developing faults we can help prevent any future repairs by refurbishing parts before issues develop.

For occasions where you need minimal downtime, we also offer an advanced replacement service for many Marconi parts, which allows us to deliver components to you in advance of a repair being carried out, allowing you to ensure that there is minimal disruption to your business.

Efficient bandwidth usageThe OMS840 transports Ethernet traffic efficiently over N x VC-12, 3 or 4 channels providing configurable and flexible bandwidth utilization options (via Virtual Concatenation), with the ability to upgrade or downgrade the links in service (via LCAS). LCAS additionally allows the benefit of re-use of protection bandwidth for traffic, and the ability to offer differentiated
service classes. Virtual Concatenation allows the best use of network bandwidth via the ability to diversely route traffic, whilst avoiding the need to upgrade.
