About the Juniper QFX3500

The Juniper Networks QFX3500 is a high-performance multipurpose switch designed specifically to handle the high demands of a next-generation data centre. Its core benefit lies in its flexibility, giving network operators the option of using it as a standalone switch or connecting to additional units as part of a QFabric system.

Featuring forty-eight 10-Gbs access ports which use small form-factor pluggable plus (SFP+) transceivers operating as 10 gigabit ethernet interfaces by default, the Juniper QFX3500 can be alternatively configured so that 12 of the ports are used as 2, 4, 6 or 8 Gbps FC (Fibre Channel) interfaces, with the remaining 36 ports capable as running as 1-Gigabit Ethernet interfaces.

Utilising QSFP+ (Quad Small Form factor pluggable plus) ports within four 40-Gbs uplink ports, the QFX3500 device is capable of operating as a stand alone switch. 4 SFP+ copper cables connected to the QSFP+’s, deliver an additional 15 10 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. In this configuration the Cisco QFX3500 is capable of delivering high speed, low latency connectivity to Layer 2 devices such as ethernet switches or blade servers, and Layer 3 network devices such as routers.

This platform also utulises the ability to function as both an FCoE-FC (Fibre Channel over Ethernet) gateway, acting as a proxy for an FCF switch, or as a FCoE Transit Switch whereby it implements FCoE Initialisation Protocol (FIP) Snooping.

The QFX3500 is able to function as part of a QFX virtual chassis, whereby multiple standalone switches can be combined and managed as a single chassis. This gives the QFX series of switches exceptional flexibility in its configuration options. When used in Juniper’s QFabric system, the QFX3500 is able to function as a Node device acting as a multistage, non blocking switch fabric which provides a unified interconnect solution for even the most demanding data centre.

As with all Juniper routers and switches, the Juniper QFX3500 runs the Juniper OS software. Installed on the unit’s 8-gigabyte internal flash drive, it provides Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching, security services and routing. It can be operated through the Junos OS command-line interface (CLI) when working as a standalone unit, or controlled through the administrator software when working as part of a QFabric system.

To ensure that the Juniper QFX3500 can be utilised in as many workspaces as possible, the unit is rack mountable and fits in an industry standard 19 inch rack mount, meaning it’s an ideal platform for those wishing to upgrade their existing architecture without worrying about additional space.
