About the Juniper M10 Network Router

The Juniper M10 is a network backbone router released by Californian networking company, Juniper Networks alongside the Juniper M5 as part of the M-Series of network backbone routers in September 2000. The M-Series also included other models such as the Juniper M20, M40 and M160. The Juniper M10 network router offered exceptional performance and flexible interfaces, all packed into a space- and power-efficient design. It leveraged the same architecture, such as ASICs, and JUNOS Internet software as the other M-series routers, helping to bring internet-tested core technology services such as packet filtering and sampling to a business network edge.

With the powerful Internet Processor II ASIC, the Juniper M10 router delivered wire-speed forwarding with ample expansion opportunities. It could achieve an impressive packet forwarding capacity of 10+ Gbps, making it well-suited for various applications, including high-speed access, peering, hosting, and high-end customer premise equipment (CPE) environments. Part of its ability to achieve these speeds came from splitting the functionality of the control plane and forwarding plane. The control plane forwarded packets to the required destination, whilst the forwarding plane determined the route of each packet. By dividing these functions, the Juniper M10 was able to avoid bottlenecks that would usually occur during packet handling.

The extensive range of supported interfaces, from T1 and E1 to OC-48c/STM-16, ensures a cost-effective and scalable solution for businesses that deployed this platform.  The Juniper M10 utilised the ASIC-based rate limiting, filtering, and sampling features to facilitate the scalable deployment of services, equipping network operators with comprehensive tools to manage larger networks at higher bandwidths. The M10 could achieve this performance and functionality utilising just three rack units, making it the perfect network solution for businesses that needed maximum routing capacity whilst minimising the physical footprint.

The Juniper M10 placed great importance on user convenience, incorporating field-replaceable modules that helped to simplify maintenance. Network operators had the flexibility to add or replace essential components such as the routing engine, cooling system, PICs, power supply, craft interface, SCB, and FPC directly on-site, without disrupting the router’s operations. This level of adaptability made the Juniper M10 highly favoured among network operators by eliminating the necessity for expensive on-site engineer visits for troubleshooting or upgrades.

In July 2004 Juniper Networks announced the end-of-life for the M10 backbone router, with the effective date set for 31st January 2010. Following this time, Juniper ceased to offer support or technical assistance for the Juniper M10 router. Despite this TXO still continues to offer repairs and the procurement of replacement parts specifically for the Juniper M10 router and can continue to support you in keeping your existing Juniper networks operational.
