About the Cisco Nexus 5010 Switching Platform

The Cisco Nexus 5010 switching platform was released alongside the Cisco Nexus 5020 as part of the Cisco Nexus 5000 Series by San Francisco based technology company, Cisco. Designed as a series of top-of-rack switches, the Cisco Nexus 5000 series offered high-speed Ethernet switching, whilst supporting Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) making it the perfect switching solution for high-traffic data centres.

The Nexus 5010 switch offers a range of advanced features tailored for data centre environments, inclusion support for Data Centre Bridging (DCB) standards, Priority Flow Control (PFC) and Enhanced Transmission Selection (ETS), all of which helps to enable lossless Ethernet for storage traffic. The switch also incorporates virtual machine awareness, meaning the switch itself can easily be integrated into virtual environments helping to facilitate the movement of virtual machines across the network.

The Cisco Nexus 5010 switch features 20 fixed ports in a single rack unit (Ru), each capable of operating at 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) speeds. These ports can be used for both network and storage connectivity, making the Cisco Nexus 5010 switch an ideal choice for data centres and storage area networks (SANs). The switch also supports expansion modules for additional connectivity options, including Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and Fibre Channel. This differs slightly from the Cisco Nexus 5020, which featured 40 fixed Ethernet Ports in a double rack unit.

Capable of delivering high levels of switching performance, the Cisco Nexus 5010 ensures bandwidth-intensive applications and data traffic can be handled efficiently whilst experiencing minimal latency. It offers a non-blocking architecture with wire-speed switching capacity of up to 20 Gigabits per second (Gbps) per port. This helps to ensure there is always smooth and reliable data transmission even during peak times of traffic across the network.

To help ensure a simplified network design, the Cisco Nexus 5010 supports Cisco’s Unified Fabric architecture, which integrates Ethernet and Fibre Channel traffic onto a single network fabric. This helps to reduce complexity for network operators when setting up a network, whilst also benefiting from lower infrastructure costs incurred from using separate platforms.

Designed for scalability, the Nexus 5010 switch allows organisations to expand their networks as their requirements grow. It supports virtual device contexts (VDCs), which enable the switch to be logically partitioned into multiple virtual switches, providing enhanced scalability and isolation. Additionally, the switch supports Cisco Fabric Extenders (FEX), which extend the switching capabilities to the server access layer and enable simplified management and deployment.

Continuous operation is key to many data centres, this means the Cisco Nexus has several features which allow it to maintain an unbroken service, even in the event of a serious hardware or software failure. These include redundant power supplies and hot-swappable fan modules, as well as redundant fabric modules, which allow for seamless failover and redundancy in the network fabric.

The Cisco Nexus 5010 also features a range of management and monitoring tools which allows network operators a greater degree of control over their network configuration by using a suite of comprehensive management options. It supports Cisco’s Data Centre Network Manager (DCNM), alongside other network management protocols, such as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Remote Monitoring (RMON). This range of management features helps network operators quickly and efficiently diagnose issues that may arise in the network without the need for extensive downtime.
