About the Cisco ASR 9010 Aggregations Services Router

The Cisco ASR 9010 Aggregation Service Router is part of the Cisco ASR 9000 series of routers released by American technology company Cisco Systems in 2008.   

Designed for service providers that require a modular, scalable, edge and core routing solution, the Cisco ASR 9010 is equipped with advanced feature sets, hardware redundancy, and scalable architecture to deliver reliable services and excellent performance.

Built around a 21 RU (Rack Unit) form factor. The Cisco ASR 9010 supports up to 8 line cards and 2 Route Switch Processors (RSP’s) which offer high-density 10GB Ethernet and 100GB Ethernet connectivity options. With a wide range of interface options, the Cisco ASR 9010 is capable of a maximum throughput of 32 Tbs whilst providing high-level bandwidth capabilities able to support billions of devices. The Cisco ASR 9010 features a higher level of scalability than previously seen on Cisco aggregation services edge routers within this price range. 

Utilising Cisco’s Route Switch processor (RSP), which acts as a processing engine to control the plane and data plane to provide switching and local management for the router. The Cisco ASR 9010 router, supports MPLS, Layer 3 VPNs (L3VPN), Layer 2 VPNs, and VPLS to allow network operators to automate and manage their switching and routing options more easily.

With several built-in redundant systems, the ASR 9010 has redundant power supplies, cooling fans, and hardware redundancy across a range of common components, many of which are hot-swappable meaning replacement components can be changed out without the need to power down the router, allowing network operators to maintain network connectivity. It also supports non-stop forwarding (NSF) and stateful switchover (SSO) to help ensure that continuous systems operation is delivered when replacing components or upgrading the platform. These features are enhanced by its user-friendly operating system.

The Cisco ASR 9010 provides exceptional management and control capabilities for network operators through the use of the Cisco IOS XR Software operating system. It can use protected memory spaces for applications or processes and a package-based distribution model meaning optional features such as multicast routing can be installed or removed as necessary without the need to take this router out of service. These features mean the Cisco IOS XR software working in tandem with the hardware allows for modularity, and easy upgrades, helping improve overall system performance.
