About the Cisco ASR 1004 Router

The Cisco ASR 1004 router is a high-performance, scalable, and highly reliable router for enterprise level businesses and service providers. It forms part of the 1000 series of aggregated service routers, which was released by American technology company, Cisco Systems as part of their Borderless Network Architecture.

Created as a transitional step from the Cisco 7200 series of CPE routers and the larger 7600 and 6500 series, the Cisco ASR 1004 was specifically designed to target enterprise level businesses that wanted a high-performing edge networking solution for their private WAN, or as a WAN aggregation and internet gateway device. This flexibility meant the Cisco ASR 1004 offered a cost-effective and future-proof solution and a clear upgrade path for businesses looking to enhance their existing edge architecture.

As well as appealing to enterprise businesses the Cisco ASR 1004 was also popular with Service providers. It could be used as a broadband layer, Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol (L2TP) access concentrator, an L2TP Network Server, or as a Layer 3 VPN (L3VPN) provider edge.

The Cisco ASR 1000 series was built around two main categories. A modular chassis version, which included the ASR 1004, ASR 1006 and ASR 1009, and a fixed chassis model which included the ASR 1001, ASR 1002 and ASR 1002-X. Other than the fixed and modular chassis design, the main difference was in the use of the processors used. The Modular design contained 3 changeable processor options, whereas the fixed chassis could house an embedded RP1 processor.

The Cisco ASR 1004 was one of the first routers from Cisco to feature their QuantumFlow Processor. Operating as the routing engine for the Cisco 1000 series, it was specifically designed to handle the high demands that have become expected in a service aggregation router. This fully programmable processor was capable of parallel processing, giving network operators greater levels of customised QoS including advanced memory management and integrated services programmability.

Running the Cisco IOS XE software, the ASR 1004 also had optional redundant processor and software support which helped improve the overall network resiliency whilst offering greater degrees of network management tools. The Cisco ASR 1004 also had built-in software redundancy to help maintain system operations in the event of any technical issues.

Built around a 4-rack unit (RU) form factor which could support up to 8 SPA’s (shared port adaptors), the Cisco ASR 1004 also featured one route processor and one embedded services processor, which allowed for enhanced control plane and data scalability, whilst also allowing for potential future upgrades to be conducted with minimal effort.

This high-performance and scalable architecture meant the Cisco ASR 1004 could scale up to 40 Gbps making it capable of handling high-bandwidth applications whilst offering high-speed connectivity and low latency.

As a service edge router with security built at the core of its design, the Cisco ASR 1004 featured a full array of high-performance WAN security, which gave network operators greater control levels of threat prevention and compliance. As standard all Cisco ASR 1004 routers featured VPN termination, firewalls, a session border controller and secure services aggregation for private WAN and remote sites.

It also featured an array of secure VPN connectivity services which reduced the need for additional standalone security devices whilst allowing for scalable network security. Some of these include Dynamic Multi-point VPN (DMVPN), Group Enhanced Easy VPN and 11-Gps IP security (IPsec) VPN Services.

Many components for the Cisco ASR 1004 router were hot-swappable, meaning they could be swapped out in the event of a systems failure without the need for network downtime and service disruption, which helped improve its efficiency and overall cost-effectiveness.

In April 2019 Cisco Systems announced the EOL (end of life) of the Cisco ASR 1004 would come on 30th April 2025. After this time, they would no longer offer any support to businesses using this network equipment. TXO will continue to offer help and advice, as well as a replacement part service for all Cisco ASR 1004 networks. Contact us to find out how we can help with your existing Cisco Network.
