About the Cisco 7304 Series Router

The Cisco 7304 router is part of a series of routers released by San Francisco-based technology company, Cisco Systems, it was released alongside the Cisco 7301 router as part of the same series. The main difference between the two was the Cisco 7301 was a single RU chassis whereas the Cisco 7304 was a four rack RU. The 7300 series routers are designed to deliver flexible, scalable, and high-performance IP and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) services at the network edge of service provider and enterprise networks. These routers offer powerful processing capabilities, a wide range of interfaces, and a compact form factor, making them an ideal choice for feature-rich, multigigabit network applications.

The Cisco 7304 Router, is a cost-effective and scalable unit that balances performance with price, offering a compact modular form factor of four rack units (RU) with four slots that fits in a standard 17 inch rack-mountable . This allows it to excel at delivering high-performance services in IP/MPLS networks, specifically at the network edge where service providers and enterprises converge. The Cisco 7304 is well-suited for various applications, including service provider edge and IP edge routing, service provider managed service customer premises equipment (CPE), as well as enterprise Internet gateway and WAN aggregation.

Connectivity is one of the key features of the Cisco 7304, ranging from DS0 to Gigabit Ethernet and OC-48/STM-16. Its architecture is engineered for high availability and multiprotocol support, ensuring reliable and versatile connectivity. Equipped with built-in Gigabit Ethernet ports and compatibility with Cisco 7200 Series port adapters, the Cisco 7304 stands as a leading-edge, flexible, and feature-rich router for the network edge. Security is understandably a key consideration of the Cisco 7300 series, with several security protocols available allowing network operators to configure remote security settings and allow users to remotely access the network whilst maintaining high levels of security.

As with many Cisco routers, system stability forms a key part of the success of this platform. The Cisco 7304 has several redundant systems, including AC/DC power supplies, as well as hot-swappable modules including line cards. This means there are greater levels of backup systems available in the event of a network, therefore preventing costly downtime. Alongside this, the Cisco 7304 router runs on the Cisco IOS operating system, which is the standard IOS for many Cisco routers. The CiscoIOS gives network operators high levels of network access controls allowing them to monitor network performance more easily and quickly troubleshoot network issues without the need for onsite visits.

The Cisco 7304 platform offers two processor options to cater to different needs. The NPE-G100 general-purpose processor, delivering approximately 1 million packets per second (mpps), is optimized for flexible feature support. On the other hand, the high-performance NSE-100 processor, offering around 3.5 mpps, leverages Cisco Parallel Express Forwarding (PXF) technology to provide hardware-accelerated IP services tailored to specific applications. These levels of flexibility in the processor options allow network operators to configure their network set-up to the needs of the business. They are also able to stack additional Cisco 7300 series routers if additional bandwidth is required, without the need for a costly network upgrade.

In 2010 Cisco announced the EOL of the Cisco 7300 series, including the Cisco 7304. After July 31st 2015, Cisco would no longer offer support for hardware or software for this series of routers. Users of this platform were recommended to migrate to the Cisco ASR 1000 Aggregation Service Routers. Despite the OEM no longer offering support for this platform, TXO is still able to repair and service network equipment from the Cisco 7300 range. Contact us today to find out how we can continue to support you in keeping your existing Cisco 7304 network operational.
