About the Cisco 4900 Series Switches

The Cisco 4900 series switches are a range of wire-speed, Layer 2 to 4 network switches produced by San Francisco based technology company, Cisco. The Cisco 4900 series is based on the popular and reliable Cisco 4500 series switches and features several models including the Cisco Catalyst 4948, Cisco Catalyst 4948 10 Gigabit Ethernet, and the Cisco Catalyst 4900M. With each model supporting varying degrees of switching capacity and throughput. This gave operators greater flexibility when choosing the network switch that best suited the needs of their business.

The Cisco 4900 series switches are designed to deliver high levels of performance, whilst also enabling businesses to handle data-intensive applications and high levels of traffic without experiencing latency, even when using high bandwidth applications such as video calling. The Cisco Catalyst 4900 series switches provide high-speed connectivity with non-blocking forwarding rates, ensuring efficient data transfer throughout the network and depending on the model, can achieve forwarding rates of up to 250 million packets per second (Mpps) and a switching capacity of 320 Gbps.

Flexibility in deployment forms the backbone of the Cisco Catalyst 4900 Series. With a modular design and several expansion slots, this series of switches can accommodate additional modules or line cards. This allows network operators to configure their switching platform to better meet the needs of their business and helps prevent excessive upgrade costs should they need to upgrade their network as their business grows.

Equipped with advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching capabilities, the Cisco 4900 series switches offer extensive functionality for network segmentation, traffic management, and routing. They support features such as VLANs, VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), and Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP) for efficient network design and redundancy. Additionally, the switches provide routing protocols such as Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) for efficient inter-VLAN and inter-subnet communication.

With several security features at the heart of its design, the Cisco Catalyst 4900 Series, gives businesses a range of security features that help ensure the network and the data it holds is always protected. Capable of supporting Access Control Lists (ACLs), port security, Secure Shell (SSH), and IEEE 802.1X, the Cisco 4900 series gives network operators unparalleled levels of control over the security of their network and helps them prevent unauthorised access to the network and greater levels of defence against threats.

Network downtime can be costly for any business, because of this the Cisco 4900 series switches have a range of redundant software and hardware features to ensure this is kept to a minimum. These include hot-swappable components such as line cards, redundant power supplies and field-replaceable fans. This means the network can continue full operation even in the event of servicing or a power or hardware failure.

To allow ease of use for network operators and to help them prioritise and manage traffic through the network effectively, the Cisco 4900 series switches have several Quality of Service (QoS) features. These include support for traffic classification and queuing mechanisms, meaning the Cisco 4900 series of switches can ensure high-priority traffic is given the necessary bandwidth and network resources to ensure an uninterrupted service, reduced latency and the best possible overall performance.

The Cisco 4900 series also includes a full range of network management options such as web-based graphical user interfaces (GUIs), command-line interfaces (CLIs), and compatibility with protocols such as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Overall, this advanced range of management features gives network operators greater levels of control over the network, helping them to better identify issues and troubleshoot errors remotely without the need for a field visit.

Cisco announced the End of Life of the 4900 Series Switches on 31st October 2015. After 31st October 2021, Cisco would no longer offer support for hardware or software for users of this platform. At TXO we will continue to service and repair hardware, as well as sourcing replacement components for networks operating with the Cisco 4900 series despite this no longer being offered by the OEM. Contact us today to find out more about how we can help to support your existing Cisco infrastructure.
