About the Cisco 4500 Series Switches
The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series Switches is a range of switches released by San Francisco based technology company, Cisco. Designed as a high-performance Layer 2-4 switching platform, the Cisco 4500 Series featured several models including the Cisco Catalyst 4503-E, Cisco Catalyst 4506-E, Cisco Catalyst 4507R+E and Cisco Catalyst 4510R+E. The change in models represented the increasing number of slots each unit houses, 3,6,7 & 10, respectively. This enabled businesses to choose the model which suited their needs best.
The Cisco 4500 series switches feature a modular design that enables organisations to tailor their networks to the individual requirements of their business. Additional units could be chained to expand the switching capacity of the network. The modular architecture helped network operators simplify upgrades as the needs of their business evolved whilst avoiding some of the high costs associated with upgrading a network.
The Cisco 4500 series switches deliver high-performance switching capabilities to handle demanding network environments. With a forwarding bandwidth of up to 848 Gbps and a switching capacity of up to 520 Mpps (million packets per second), these switches ensure fast and efficient data transfer even when using high performance applications. These Cisco 4500 series switches offer support for a wide range of Ethernet interfaces, including Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and 10 Gigabit Ethernet, whilst also offering multiple connectivity options. This allows a considerable number of devices using high bandwidth applications to join the network at the same time without causing latency issues.
As an advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching platform the Cisco Catalyst 4500 series featured a range of switching protocols such as Support for Virtual LANs (VLANs) and VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), advanced Quality of Service (QoS) features for traffic prioritisation, Support for IPv4 and IPv6 routing and Multicast routing support (PIM, IGMP). This range of features allowed Network operators to ensure high priority traffic was handled efficiently, whilst also maintaining high levels of security.
Cisco understands that security is an utmost priority for many organisations, which is why they have designed the Cisco 4500 series with a range of security features to safeguard against threats attempting to access the network. The Cisco 4500 switches allow network operators to utilise Access Control Lists (ACLs), Port Security, Network Admission Control (NAC), and Secure Shell (SSH) for secure remote management. This means they can easily monitor the network for threats and prevent them before they take place.
To enable efficient network management, the Cisco 4500 series switches offer a range of management options, including a web-based graphical user interface (GUI), command-line interface (CLI), and support for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). This helps network operators easily manage the network, set different network priorities and monitor the performance of the network through one centralised platform.
As with many other Cisco Switching platforms, the Cisco 4500 series switches incorporate several redundancy features to ensure maximum network uptime. These Cisco 4500 switches support dual supervisor engines which enable uninterrupted network operation in the event of a component failure. Hot-swappable power supplies and fan modules and additional software redundancy allow the network to continue operation even during maintenance or faults.
Many models within the Cisco 4500 series switches provide Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities. In October 2019, Cisco announced the End of Life of the Cisco 4500 series switches. After 31st October 2025, they would no longer support or service existing hardware or software for the 4500 series switches.
