About the Cisco 2950 Series Switches

The Cisco 2950 is a range of stackable or standalone fixed-condition switches created by San Francisco telecommunications company, Cisco as part of their 2950 series of internet switches. Capable of providing high-speed Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, the Cisco 2950 was designed to be deployed in small, mid-sized and enterprise branch offices and offers a scalable and affordable networking solution for a variety of businesses.

The Cisco 2950 series switches are available in various models, offering different port densities allowing network operators to customise the deployment of their switch. These switches typically provide 12, 24 or 48 Fast Ethernet ports, which allow it to connect a variety of devices, including printers, servers, and other switches, to the network. The availability of multiple ports ensures ample connectivity options while supporting future network expansion.

As with many Cisco switches, scalability forms a core part of the functionality of the Cisco 2950. Capable of operating as a standalone switch, they can also be stacked in a standard 19-inch wall mounted rack. This means businesses can increase their switching capability as they expand, this helps mitigate some of the costs involved, if upgrades are needed in the future.

The Cisco 2950 series switches support Fast Ethernet connectivity, facilitating data transfer at 10/100 Mbps speeds. They are also capable of supporting a forwarding bandwidth of 4.4 Gbps whilst supporting a forwarding rate of 6.6Mpps (million packets per second). Along with this, some models in the Cisco 2950 series offer Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports which allow for high-speed connection to other switches or backbone networks which allows network operators to utilise increased bandwidth and performance.

As a Layer 2 Switch the Cisco 2950 supports several advanced switching protocols which give network operators greater control over the security of the network. These include Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) and Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP), IGMP snooping for multicast filtering, Port security and MAC address filtering as well as VLAN support.

Virtual LAN (VLAN) technology is a key feature of the Cisco 2950 series switches, enabling network administrators to create logical network segments within a physical network infrastructure. The use of VLANs gives network operators enhanced security controls, improved network performance, and help simplify network management allowing them to isolate groups of devices as necessary. The Cisco 2950 series supports IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging as well as port-based 802.1Q tagging, which allows for flexible VLAN configurations and inter-VLAN routing capabilities.

The Cisco 2950 series switches incorporate advanced Quality of Service (QoS) features with 4 egress queues per port allowing network operators to prioritise specific types of traffic, such as voice or video, over the network. This allows them to allocate bandwidth and enforce traffic policies, which in turn helps improve the efficiency of the network and the overall experience for network users.

To help streamline many of these network management tasks, the Cisco 2950 series switches offer support for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), which allows network operators to monitor and manage the switches remotely, meaning finding errors and general troubleshooting can more easily be carried out without the need for an onsite visit.

As with many Cisco switches, the Cisco 2950 series switches are incredibly reliable with several redundancy features built in to maximise uptime, these include software features like the STP and RSTP, which provide redundant links and ensure network resilience by preventing loops and maximising network uptime. The Cisco 2950 also features several hardware redundancies and hot-swappable components such as power supplies and redundant power options. This combination of hardware and software-based redundancies means this switch is incredibly resilient and can operate with minimal downtime.

Cisco announced the EOL (End of life) for the Cisco 2950 on 20th October 2013, after which point, they would no longer offer technical or hardware support for anyone utilising this platform. TXO is still able to offer a repair service for the Cisco 2950 as well as being able to source replacement parts for this platform.

Power
Connectors
Customers can provide power to a switch by using the internal power supply, the Cisco RPS 675 Redundant Power System.
The connectors are located at the back of the switch.
• Internal power supply connector
– The internal power supply is an auto-ranging unit.
– The internal power supply supports input voltages between 100 and 240 VAC.
– Use the supplied AC power cord to connect the AC power connector to an AC power outlet.
• Cisco RPS 675 connector
– The connector offers connection for an optional Cisco RPS 675 that uses AC input and supplies DC output to the
switch.
– The connector offers a 675W redundant power system that supports one of up to six external network devices and
provides power to one failed device at a time.
– The connector automatically senses when the internal power supply of a connected device fails and provides power
to the failed device, preventing loss of network traffic.
– Attach only the Cisco RPS 675 (Model PWR675-AC-RPS-NI=) to the redundant power supply receptacle with this
connector.
