Overview of the Cisco 2911 Integrated Services Router
The Cisco 2911 Integrated Services router (ISR) was released in 2009 by American technology company, Cisco Systems. It formed part of the 2900 series of integrated service routers, which also included the 2901, 2921 and 2951. The Cisco 2911 is a feature-rich integrated services router with core functionality including advanced routing, enhanced POE (power over internet), gigabit ethernet switching, and enhanced security capabilities.
Featuring industry-leading levels of service integration, the Cisco 2911 router is designed to support the high-performance requirements of a branch office. By combining voice, video, security and application services into one easy-to-use network device, network operators can benefit from a high-performance platform without the need for several expensive pieces of hardware.
Capable of operating at high speeds, the Cisco 2911 is perfectly suited for deployment in high-speed WAN networks, where it can deliver concurrent services with speeds of up to 75Mbps. It also features a multigiGabit Fabric (MGF) which gives network operators greater network management options with the flexibility to improve the bandwidth of their network without compromising routing performance by utilising high-bandwidth module communication.
As with many Cisco routers, the Cisco 2911 features a modular design, allowing network operators to scale their network as required. The network can be expanded to suit the needs of the business, rather than implementing a network router that is bigger than necessary, therefore helping reduce the total cost of ownership. Many modules are compatible with earlier series of Cisco routers, meaning component modules can be used across different network setups if required.
One of the core features of the Cisco 2911, is its ability to allow users from across a wider business network to benefit from unified communications through IP phone and video, as well as access to the information they require, no matter where they are working from. In response to this, the Cisco 2911 ISR has a range of security features meaning remote access can be achieved without the need to compromise network security. Security features include a software firewall, VPN, Dynamic Multipoint VPN (DMVPN), advanced application inspection and encryption.
Featuring several interfaces including 3 integrated 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports, 4 high-speed WAN interface card (HWIC) slots, four integrated EHWIC slots, and 2 service module slots, the Cisco has a wide range of connectivity options, including the ability to integrate Cisco’s Enhanced EtherSwitch Service module through the use of an expansion slot. This module allows for greater levels of layer 2 and layer 3 switching whilst also utilising Cisco’s enhanced Power over Ethernet (ePoE), per-port PoE power monitoring to maintain performance whilst minimising power consumption.
The Cisco 2911 router is equipped with a 2-core processor running at a speed of 1.5 GHz, and features 1 GB of DRAM, 256 MB of flash memory, and 2 GB of USB flash memory, making it capable of maintaining maximum performance and low latency. It requires an AC 120/230 V (50/60 Hz) or DC -48 V fully integrated power supply, with a maximum power consumption of 290W. There is also the option on the Cisco 2900 series to include an optional redundant power supply through the use of an external RPS device, which helps minimise network downtime in the event of an incident.
All Cisco series 2900 routers run the Cisco IOS operating software. This operating system has a unique feature, whereby a universal software image is installed on each unit. Additional software features can then be unlocked, if required, by purchasing the relevant software licence. The main benefit of this is that it makes installing new software much more efficient, as the network doesn’t need to be restricted whilst the new software image is downloaded.
Cisco announced they would be ending support for the Cisco 2900 series integrated services routers on the 31st of December 2022, after which point they will no longer offer support for networking equipment in this range. TXO continues to offer help and advice, as well as servicing components and sourcing replacement parts for your existing Cisco 2900 network equipment. Contact us today to find out more.
The Cisco 2900 series integrated routers were replaced by the Cisco 4000 series of ISRs which provide a direct upgrade pathway.
