About the Arista 7300 Modular Switch

The Arista 7300 is a high-performance data centre switch released by American networking company Arista Networks. Released as part of the wider 7300 series, this range of switches included two separate models, the Arista 7304 and Arista 7308 which represent the 4-slot or 8-slot modular options the platform supports. 

The Arista 7300 series utilises a range of layer 2 and layer 3 switching options whilst offering flexible and scalable deployment within a range of data centre environments. Allowing space for two supervisor modules and depending on the model either four or eight line card modules. The Arista 7300 can support a high-density port configuration giving it excellent connectivity options in a relatively small space. 

The 7304 chassis is designed to fit into 8 rack units, while the 7308 chassis fits into 13 rack units of a standard data centre rack. Both supervisor and line card modules are easily inserted from the front, along with power supply modules, while fabric and fan modules are installed from the rear meaning this platform is easy to install and manage for network operators.

Designed to support the greater demand for 10 and 40 Gigabit Ethernet switching which is required by high bandwidth business applications, the Arista 7300 series utilises a range of high-density line cards which can deliver up to 1.92 billion packets per second, whilst each line card contains 24MB or packet memory. There are a variety of configurable line cards available for the Arista 7300 which can be configured so each line card can be connected directly to the fabric modules. This allows the Arista 7300 to support a variety of Layer 2 and 3 switching protocols whilst maintaining exceptional performance even during high traffic periods.

Maintaining consistent network operation in the event of network failure is of high importance for any data centre. Due to this Arista has designed the 7300 series to feature a range of hot-swappable modules such as supervisor modules and line cards, meaning these components can be swapped in and out of the platform for maintenance or operational reasons without the need for costly downtime. On top of this, the platform features redundant power supplies and source modules to ensure continuous operation in the event of a system failure.

For many network operators, scalability has become a key factor when deciding which platform to use. Having a platform that can grow with the needs of the business helps ensure maximum network throughput, whilst also minimising the costly expenses involved in upgrading a complex switching network. The Arista 7300 series covers this perfectly by allowing multiple Arista 7300 chassis to be combined using Arista’s Mullti-Chassis Link Aggregation technology (MLAG) and when configured like this, a pair of Arista 7300 switches are able to support over 12,000 servers. The Arista 7300 series is also easy to upgrade, using hot-swappable components which can be added or removed as necessary allowing for easy expansion of the network without the need for costly network downtime.

Running the Arista EOS operating software, which is the standard OS running in all Arista routers and switches, the Arista 7300 series utilises the modular abilities of the operating system to separate the switch state from protocol processing and application logic. As well as this, all processes which run through the EOS are operated through their own protected memory space meaning they can continue operating in the event of failure in another part of the platform. This combined with the excellent hardware redundancy and resilience makes the Arista 7300 a reliable platform that is suitable for deployment in multiple situations.
