About the Alcatel-Lucent 7950 XRS System

The Alcatel-Lucent 7950 Extensible Routing System (XRS) is part of a family of high performance core routing platforms created by French telecommunications company Alcatel-Lucent in 2012. It was a direct competitor to other similar core routing platforms, such as those produced by Juniper and Ciena. 

The Alcatel-Lucent 7950 Extensible Routing System featured three separate models, the XRS-20, XRS-40 and the XRS-16c. Although the three models held the same core functionality, such as 32-Tbps capacity and 160 ports of 100-Gigabit Ethernet, the individual models offered varying configurations which allowed network operators considerable flexibility when deciding which model would work best for the individual requirements of their business. 

Based around Alcatel-Lucent’s FP3 400-Gbps chipset, the 7950 XRS was a feature rich solution. Unlike many other manufacturers’ core routing platforms, which reduced functionality to enable greater levels of scalability, this platform was designed to be scalable whilst supporting an incredible amount of features. These included up to 400 Gbps transmission speeds, integrated carrier SDN control across IP, MPLS, Ethernet and optical transport layers, end to end cross-domain management and a modular architecture.

One unique feature of the Alcatel-Lucent 7950 XRS, was that it could utilise tuneable 10GE and 100GE DWDM optics to interface directly with the photonic transport layer, meaning optical transponders are not required for data transmission. This helped to streamline the set up process and reduce the cost required during installation. 

As a core router, the Alcatel-Lucent 7950 excels in providing advanced routing capabilities and supports a wide range of routing protocols, including Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), Intermediate System to Intermediate System (IS-IS), and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS). These routing protocols help network operators build scalable, optimised, and secure networks that efficiently handle diverse traffic patterns and can support the needs of many medium to large sized business networks. 

Many businesses are beginning to understand how their network setups can have an impact on the environment. Because of this, Alcatel-Lucent incorporated many features into the 7950 XRS which help minimise power consumption and improve this core router’s green credentials. The system employs power-saving mechanisms, including dynamic power management and fan speed control, to optimise energy usage without compromising performance. These energy-efficient design principles contribute to a reduced environmental impact as well as including many cost saving benefits. 

After their merger with Nokia in 2016, the Alcatel-Lucent 7950 XRS stopped being produced under this name and instead became the Nokia 7950 XRS.
