The transition from legacy systems to All-IP marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of telecommunications. With businesses across the UK preparing for this digital transformation, it’s essential to understand the implications and opportunities that lie ahead. Joining us today is Andy Martin, TXO’s Key Account Director for BT, who will share his perspective on navigating this transition and ensuring a seamless experience for businesses transitioning to All-IP connectivity.

Interviewer: Hello Andy, thank you for taking the time to speak with us today. Could you start by explaining what All-IP is and how it differs from the PSTN?

Andy: Absolutely. The PSTN, or Public Switched Telephone Network, has been the backbone of our traditional phone system for decades. It relies on copper wires and physical connections. All-IP, on the other hand, represents a shift towards a fully digital network. It’s built for the future, allowing various devices to connect via broadband or ethernet, rather than relying on copper wires. So, in essence, All-IP offers more flexibility and scalability compared to the outdated PSTN.

Interviewer: Why is it crucial for businesses to transition to All-IP?

Andy: The transition to All-IP is essential for several reasons. Firstly, the PSTN is nearing its end of life. No new connections to the PSTN have been allowed since September 2023, so businesses need to act now to ensure they’re not left behind. Secondly, transitioning to All-IP is part of a government-backed initiative to future-proof our communications infrastructure. By embracing All-IP, businesses can unify their communication platforms, leading to improved collaboration and productivity. Additionally, it presents opportunities for cost savings and the integration of advanced solutions like Cloud Voice.

Interviewer: Some might think that the move to All-IP only concerns landlines. Could you clarify this misconception?

Andy: Absolutely. The transition to All-IP is not just about landlines. Many devices, from alarms to chip and pin machines, rely on the PSTN for connectivity. These devices will also need to transition to IP-enabled technology to remain operational. BT is prepared to support businesses through this transition by offering expertise and assistance in upgrading their devices.

Interviewer: Are all business devices currently connected to the PSTN compatible with All-IP?

Andy: While many devices can seamlessly transition to All-IP, there are certain cases where the switch may be more complicated. For example, businesses that rely solely on landlines or voice-only services without broadband may face challenges. Additionally, some unique use cases or devices may not be compatible with existing All-IP products. However, we’re working on temporary solutions to ensure connectivity for these cases while encouraging businesses to register their interest and collaborate with us to find suitable solutions.

Interviewer: What measures are in place to support vulnerable business customers or end-users during this transition?

Andy: BT is committed to protecting vulnerable customers during the transition to All-IP. They’ve signed the government’s Public Switched Telephone Networks Charter and are working closely with regulatory bodies and industry groups to identify and support vulnerable customers. The priority is to ensure that no one is left behind during this transition.

Interviewer: Lastly, could you address any potential delays in the PSTN switch-off and how BT is managing this situation?

Andy: Currently, there is a pause in non-voluntary customer migrations, which may impact the overall timing of the PSTN switch-off program. However, we’re actively working to minimise any delays and continue supporting businesses in their transition to All-IP connectivity. Collaboration with the government and regulatory bodies remains crucial in navigating these challenges and ensuring a smooth transition for all stakeholders involved.

Interviewer: Thank you, Andy, for sharing your insights on the transition to All-IP and BT’s role in supporting businesses through this process.
