Setting the standard for optical transceiver testing
TXO has extensive network hardware testing capabilities and a fantastic team of engineers with expertise in testing today’s most popular systems, through to niche and legacy end-of-life platforms. Coverage is multi-vendor and includes Nokia, Alcatel, Ericsson, Huawei, Marconi, Arista, Juniper, HP and Cisco and many more.
We host a full range of prevalent telecom domains including:
- IP routing and switching both core and edge.
- Optical transmission using SDH, DWDM and OTN.
- Access equipment for GPON.
- Data centre equipment such as switches with 40G and 100G interfaces.
Testing for OEM compatibility:
To begin with, we’ll immerse ourselves in your setup to fully understand the OEMs and associated platforms in play. This helps us advise the correct level of functionality and form factors needed for your task. Once all the key information is gathered, we go to work!
We then select the correct machine in scope and run a full traffic test over a clean fibre in our lab. A full test report and lens clean image is available from the point of shipment. Code reads, HECI checks and alterations to vendor description are all taken care of at this point.
As part of our compatibility testing process we also check Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) read outs. Within the transceiver, DOM provides the user with real time operating parameters such as Tx power, Rx power, temperature of the module as well as power supply voltage. In addition we check that the transceiver is fully interoperable with the device by running a traffic test using an EXFO testing instrument. Where required, a BERT or RFC 2544 test report is also created.

Distance verification:
We verify that the transceiver will reach the required distance in three ways.
Firstly, we measure optical power of the laser and the sensitivity of the receiver in order to ensure they each meet specified parameters. This confirms it has sufficient optical budget to deliver the distance. This is typically achieved using lab instruments such as a power meter and also a variable attenuator.
Secondly, we apply fibre spools of various lengths to confirm that the transceiver will function at the advertised distance. This test is used in conjunction with a pair of EXFO testing instruments in order to push an appropriate traffic signal into the router / switch / optical device and then transmit it to another device via the transceiver under test and over an appropriate length of fibre.
Thirdly, we document all of these processes and package them in an easy-to-read report for your records. In this way the stated distance can be absolutely proven and at the same time a transmission test such as a RFC2544 test can be run in order to confirm transceiver performance.
