In her latest article for Data Center Dynamics, Joanna Hutchinson-Parker, Managing Director for UK & APAC at TXO, explores how operators are embracing the circular economy—not just to reduce waste, but to unlock new revenue streams and improve efficiency.

Rather than treating legacy equipment as scrap, operators are now refurbishing, reusing, recycling, and reselling network hardware. This approach is already proving profitable, with telecom groups like Telstra generating millions from the resale of decommissioned copper. At the same time, supply chain challenges have prompted many operators to source second-user equipment, helping them extend the life of existing infrastructure while cutting costs and reducing Scope 3 emissions.

OEMs are also adapting, with forward-thinking manufacturers launching refurbishment programmes and take-back schemes to support operators’ circular strategies. As the industry moves toward a fully closed-loop system, companies that embrace these models will gain a competitive edge—financially and environmentally.
