About the Cisco 6513 Series Network Switch

The Cisco 6513 is an enterprise level network switch released by San Francisco-based telecoms company, Cisco as part of the 6500 series of switches. The Cisco 6513 network switch was released along with several other switches in the same series including the Cisco 6503, 6506 and 6509. It was designed for IP Communications and application delivery in enterprise campus and service provider networks. The Cisco 6513 switch offered increased user productivity and operational control by offering secure, converged services from the wiring closet to the core network, data centre, and WAN edge.

The Cisco 6513 switch features a wide range of industry-leading features, as well as supporting a range of advanced service modules, a cutting-edge supervisor engine, and 11 new application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs).  These features helped enterprise level business and service providers a cost-effective, but powerful platform that allowed them to scale performance and port density across various chassis configurations and interfaces, including LAN, WAN, and metropolitan-area networks (MAN). With a 13-slot chassis, the Cisco 6513 featured an extensive range of integrated services modules, which allowed network operators to customise their network based on the needs of the business by adding relevant network security, content switching, telephony, and network analysis modules as necessary. 

Running the Cisco IOS operating system which is the proprietary OS software across all Cisco switches, the Cisco 6513 switch incorporated advanced IT infrastructure combined with impressive hardware to deliver industry-leading data transfer speeds.  From 48-port to 576-port 10/100/1000 configurations or 1152-port 10/100 Ethernet wiring closets to 400 million packets per second (mpps) network cores with support for up to 192 1-Gbps or 32 10-Gbps trunks, the Catalyst 6513 Series provided exceptional performance whilst ensuring network uptime with stateful failover capability between redundant routing and forwarding engines.

To boost operational efficiency and minimise downtime, the Cisco Catalyst 6513 Series incorporates Cisco IOS Software Modularity. This feature allows modular Cisco IOS subsystems to run as independent processes. The benefits of this approach include minimising unplanned downtime through self-healing processes, simplifying software changes with subsystem In-Service Software Upgrades (ISSU), and enabling process-level, automated policy control by integrating Embedded Event Manager (EEM). These advancements gave network operators enhanced operational flexibility, streamline software management helping contribute to a more resilient network infrastructure.

In August 2011, Cisco announced the end of life of the Cisco 6513 switch as being the 31st of August 2017. After this point, Cisco would no longer offer technical or hardware support for businesses running this platform. Despite support no longer being offered by the OEM, TXO is still able to repair and service parts and components for the Cisco 6513 switch as well as sourcing replacement parts as necessary.
