About the Cisco 5509 Multilayer Switch

The Cisco Catalyst 5509 is a multilayer switching system released by San Francisco based technology company, Cisco. It was released as part of the wider 5500 series, which were developed by Cisco to offer a switching solution that focused on large enterprise businesses that needed high-performance wiring closets. The Cisco 5509 also excelled as a backbone switching solution, catering to businesses of various sizes, from small to enterprise-level. It was part of Cisco’s wider 5000 family of multi-layer switches which came in 2-, 5-, 9-, and 13-slot chassis, this model represented the 9-slot chassis among the five modular options available.

The nine slots of the Catalyst 5509, make it suitable for both wiring closet and backbone applications. In wiring closet scenarios, it serves as a cost-effective solution supporting high-density, dedicated Token Ring or 10/100/1000 Ethernet switching. With a minimal 15 Amp circuit requirement, it allows for easy installation in most wiring closet environments. Moreover, the Catalyst 5509 supports various advanced features, such as automatic protocol broadcast filtering to conserve bandwidth, intelligent multicast forwarding for multimedia traffic, and load balancing across redundant links. Designed to fit into a standard 19 in. (48.26 cm) rack, the Catalyst 5509 allows access to all system components from a single side of the chassis and a fully configured system only requires a single power supply for operation.

As an advanced gigabit Ethernet backbone solution, the Catalyst 5509 meets the requirements of today’s fast-growing enterprise intranets. It supports up to 38 ports of Gigabit Ethernet, and when combined with Cisco’s Gigabit EtherChannel technology, multiple gigabit Ethernet links can be treated as a single logical link, delivering impressive device-to-device throughput of up to 8 Gbps (full duplex). This represents the highest port density available in the Catalyst 5500 series.

Equipped with integrated frame and cell switching, comprehensive support for Cisco IOS-based routing, as well as Fast EtherChannel, Gigabit EtherChannel, and ATM, the Cisco 5509 can effectively accommodate the growing demands of expanding campus systems. Its media-independent architecture ensures compatibility with diverse data communication types, including legacy LAN and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching technologies, through a wide range of Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), and ATM switch modules.

The Catalyst 5509, featuring 9 slots, is highly suitable for both wiring closet and backbone applications. In wiring closet scenarios, it serves as a cost-effective solution supporting high-density, dedicated Token Ring or 10/100/1000 Ethernet switching. With a minimal 15 Amp circuit requirement, it allows for easy installation in most wiring closet environments. Moreover, the Catalyst 5509 supports various advanced features for the wiring closet, such as automatic protocol broadcast filtering to conserve bandwidth, intelligent multicast forwarding for multimedia traffic, and load balancing across redundant links.

The Cisco 5509 multilayer switch incorporates Cisco’s NetFlow switching system, a combination of the simplicity and speed of switching with the intelligence and scalability of routing, enabling multilayer switching (MLS) scalability. It shares the same set of interface modules and software features as the broader Cisco 5500 family, ensuring interoperability and investment protection across all chassis.

Cisco announced the EOL of the Cisco 5509 as 30th June 2008, after which point they would no longer offer support to any businesses running this platform. TXO is still able to repair and refurbish many components for the Cisco 5509, as well as sourcing replacement parts if necessary. Speak to TXO today to find out how we can help your existing Cisco 5509 remain operational.
