About the Cisco 4506-E Series Network Switch

The Cisco 4506-E Series Switch is a high-performance network switch released by San Francisco-based networking company, Cisco. The Cisco 4506 was released as part of the wider series of 4500 Series Switches which also included the Cisco 4503-E, 4507R+E, and 4510R+E. The 4500 series was designed to enable large businesses to develop their borderless networks and deliver an excellent quality user experience through high performance, mobility, and security through Layer 2-4 switching. These switches offer enhanced security, mobility, application performance, video capabilities, and energy efficiency by utilising a resilient, virtualised, and automated infrastructure.

By offering borderless performance, scalability, and a wide range of IP services, the Cisco Catalyst 4506 Series Switches enabled businesses to manage all their network operations through one reliable platform, which would usually have been managed by several networking devices. Running a centralised forwarding architecture, the Cisco 4506 helped simplify operations for network operators, enabling collaboration, virtualisation, and operational manageability which allowed them to cater to the evolving needs of their organisations. The high performance, scalability, and wide range of services helped make the Cisco Catalyst 4506 Series Switches provide a cost-effective solution to their networking needs.

The Cisco Catalyst 4506-E Series network switch is equipped with 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) uplinks and supports Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) and Universal PoE (UPOE), allowing customers to future-proof their networks even if the data transfer requirements of the business grow over time. The 4506-E, comes as a highly flexible 6-slot form factor chassis, which supports either 24 or 48 Gbps per line-card slot. It also allows line cards to be mixed and matched to meet the requirements of various LAN access, server connectivity, small and medium-sized business (SMB), or branch-office deployments.

Network downtime is a serious concern for any enterprise level business and can prove costly. To mitigate the risk in this happening, the Cisco 4506-E has a range of integrated resiliency built into the platform including redundant fans, software-based fault tolerance, and 1 + 1 power supply redundancy. As well as these features, the Cisco 4506 also allows for many of the components to be ‘hot-swapped’, meaning parts such as the line cards and modules can be replaced or removed, without the need to reboot or restart the platform. This comprehensive resiliency, both in hardware and software, minimises network downtime, ensuring optimal performance, productivity and overall profitability.

The Cisco 4506-E has a range of advanced network management applications which play a crucial role in reducing the overall costs involved in running a high-performance network, whilst improving overall network availability. By simplifying and automating day-to-day tasks associated with network management, network operators can maintain smooth and consistent performance in the running of the network without the need for them to manually check performance. The Cisco Catalyst 4506-E switch offers a superior Command-Line Interface (CLI) for detailed configuration of network components and utilises the Cisco Prime infrastructure for unified management of wired and wireless networks. Prime infrastructure facilitates provisioning, continuous monitoring and maintenance, configuration templates, and comprehensive device and user views. Additionally, it serves as the Flow Navigator (FNF) collector for user traffic views using the Prime Assurance Manager module.

The Cisco Catalyst 4506-E switch offers four chassis options and four supervisor engine options, providing a common architecture that can scale up to 388 ports. The redundant R+E chassis of Cisco Catalyst ensures high availability by supporting 1 + 1 redundant supervisor engines with subsecond failover time and full-image InService Software Upgrades (ISSUs). Nonstop forwarding with stateful switchover (NSF/SSO) and ISSU ensure continuous packet forwarding during supervisor engine switchover, guaranteeing high availability for collaboration applications and voice over IP (VoIP). The Cisco 4506-E also supports compatibility with line cards from other widely deployed Cisco switches such as the Cisco Catalyst 4000 making some components backward compatible with existing Cisco infrastructure.

In April 2012, Cisco announced the End of Life of the Cisco 4506-E as 30th April 2018, after this point the OEM would no longer offer support and maintenance for businesses running this platform.
