About the Cisco 2960 Series

The Cisco 2960 Series Switch is a Layer 2 edge switch produced by San Francisco-based tech company Cisco. Released in September 2005, the Cisco 2960 is designed for enterprise, midmarket and branch office networks, which hosts an array of features that helps businesses streamline their switching with one easy-to-use platform.

Designed to support the increasing demands of modern networking infrastructures, the Cisco 2960 series switches come in two separate models which offer 24 or 48 Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet ports. Network operators have multiple connectivity options to accommodate a wide array of devices and support high-speed data transfer, meaning businesses have full flexibility in how they deploy this switch. The robust performance of the Cisco 2960 series ensures seamless communication and data exchange across the network.

As with many Cisco switches, the Cisco 2960 series switches incorporate a full suite of comprehensive security features which are designed to safeguard the networks they are deployed in and protect against potential threats. This ensures network operators have full control over the security of their network. These switches support features such as Access Control Lists (ACLs), port security, Dynamic ARP Inspection (DAI), and IP Source Guard, bolstering network security and mitigating unauthorised network access and spoofing.

Cisco 2960 series switches enable network operators’ efficient network segmentation through Virtual LAN (VLAN) technology. They can create logical network segments within the physical infrastructure which in turn helps enhance security, optimise network performance, and simplify the overall management of the network. The VLAN support on Cisco 2960 switches also includes IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging, which enables easy integration with existing VLAN configurations and facilitates inter-VLAN routing.

To prioritise critical network traffic and ensure consistent performance, the Cisco 2960 series switches offer advanced Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities. Operators can allocate bandwidth, classify and prioritise traffic based on specific criteria, and enforce traffic policies for individual network equipment. This allows them to ensure the resources of the network are allocated correctly for optimum performance and helps to ensure that applications like voice and video receive the necessary bandwidth and deliver a superior user experience.

The Cisco 2960 series switches run Cisco’s proprietary IOS software. This feature-rich software provides a comprehensive suite of management tools and features that simplify network administration. Network operators can leverage command-line interface (CLI) or utilise intuitive web-based graphical interfaces to configure, monitor, and troubleshoot the switches, ensuring streamlined and efficient management.

The Cisco 2960 series switches offer a range of advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 features that enhance network functionality and scalability. These include Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP), Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), and IP routing capabilities. These features improve network reliability, prevent loops, enable redundancy, and facilitate efficient routing, enabling organisations to build resilient and flexible network architectures.

Supporting the latest PoE (Power of Ethernet) technology, the Cisco 2960 supports several Cisco PoE devices including Cisco IP phones and Cisco Aironet WLAN access points, each of which can provide up to 15.4W of power per port. It also supports any IEEE 80.3af compliant device as default without any additional configuration being required from users.

The Cisco 2960 also benefits from the use of Cisco’s EnergyWise technology.  This feature enables network operators to monitor and manage power consumption across network devices and optimise the energy usage helping to reduce the carbon footprint of their network. This reduction in energy usage also allows businesses potential cost savings, making the Cisco 2960 the perfect platform for businesses that want to minimise the environmental impact of their network and lower their energy costs.

Cisco announced the end of life for the Cisco 2960 Series on the 31st October 2019, after which point Cisco would no longer offer support for businesses utilising this platform. TXO can continue to help service switches and source replacement parts from the 2960 series even though this is no longer offered by the OEM.
