About the Ciena 5142 Service Aggregation Switch
The Ciena 5142 is a high density packet switch released by the Ciena corporation in 2013 as part of their E-Suite family of aggregation switches which also included the Ciena 5160 packet switch. Designed to enable rapid service delivery, end user flexibility and scalability, whilst maintaining a reduced power and space footprint, the Ciena 5142 is a popular switch that benefits from low implementation costs.
Featuring twenty 1GbE 100M/1000M SFP ports and four 1GbE/10GBE multi-rate SFP+ ports enabling users to tailor the gigabit aggregation cost to the individual needs of their business, the Ciena 5142 is a packet switch that delivers unparalleled levels of flexibility to network administrators helping them to manage their costs more effectively.
Capable of utilising Ethernet, Carrier Ethernet 2.0 and MPLS OAM support, this platform offers a complete synchronisation solution for operators wishing to run compact, dense metro access aggregation and Ethernet business services including E-Line, E-LAN, E-Tree and E-Access. This makes it perfect for businesses which want to maximise the profitability of their setup by combining multiple network connections into a single link.
To further increase the profitability for network administrators, the Ciena 5142 is also able to utilise Ciena’s ‘Zero-touch provisioning’. A system which allows for device deployment, SLA performance testing, and system turn-up to be managed from the Network Operations Centre. This means on-site personnel and test equipment are no longer required, therefore speeding up the operator’s ability to conduct service roll-outs and upgrades. Zero-touch provisioning also enables engineers to more easily respond to network events and address issues remotely, therefore helping to minimise network downtime.
Alongside the technical and service elements of this platform, the Ciena 5142 has many features that gives operators incredible flexibility when installing the unit. It can be deployed with either an AC or DC power supply module, with two power ports for added redundancy. The Ciena 5142 also keeps a minimal footprint and is rack mountable to allow for greater installation options. This combined makes the Ciena 5142 both service and utility smart.
