About the Ciena 3960 Service Delivery Switch

The Ciena 3960 is a service delivery switch produced by the US technology company, Ciena Corporation. Designed to operate in a range of environments, it’s capable of supporting 10G demarcation, 10G/1G enterprise services and wireless backhaul providers and 10G/1G service aggregation as well as a range of 10G/1G applications through the use of a high-capacity switch fabric. This makes the Cisco 3960 a reliable and cost-effective solution for diverse carrier networks and topologies including fibre rings, point-to-point fibre, 10GbE uplinks and dual-homed network uplinks.

To support the higher ethernet bandwidths expected of an enterprise level switching system, the Ciena 3960 utilises four 10GbE ports and eight 1GbE ports in a 1RU single rack unit. This high-density port configuration combined with an unprecedented level of QoS makes this service delivery switch suitable for the most demanding of businesses where it can be optimised for seamless service delivery and deployed across a wide variety of network environments, including metro and regional networks.

The high level of carrier-class, MEF-14-compliant Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms featured in the Ciena 3960 enable the seamless delivery of various traffic types and rates over a single access infrastructure without degradation of signal or bandwidth. It offers rich classification of traffic flows based on Layer 1 through Layer 4 parameters, including physical port, MAC address, VLAN tag, IP address, and Layer 4 port address.

The Ciena 3960 service delivery switch also provides flexible priority resolution for Class of Service mapping. The advanced network management platform gives network operators greater control over network traffic allowing them to configure traffic priority settings in VLAN, MPLS, and PBB-TE tags, as well as in IP packet headers. The Ciena 3960 also features ingress metering for Committed Information Rate (CIR), Excess Information Rate (EIR), Committed Burst Size (CBS), and Excess Burst Size (EBS) service delivery, as well as advanced features like Two-rate Three-Color Marking (trTCM) and Random Early Drop (RED) for congestion handling, allowing to efficiently maintain reliable network performance.

The Ciena 3960 Service Delivery Switch utilises a common service-aware operating system featured across all Ciena aggregation switches, ensuring consistency for ethernet access and aggregation applications. This architecture enables rapid implementation of the latest advancements in Ethernet technologies, new services, and standards proposed by the IEEE, IETF, and MEF. It also promotes interoperability with Ethernet equipment from other vendors, leading to improved efficiency and cost savings through a common deployment and service provisioning model. With ubiquitous service offerings, the 3960 facilitates the rapid rollout of new services across the entire network, providing agility and responsiveness to changing market demands.

The Ciena 3960 software is specifically designed to streamline the activation process, offering plug-and-play functionality that simplifies the rollout of new services. Additionally, the switch supports an advanced automatic activation feature, which allows operators to upgrade default settings and deploy custom configurations tailored to the specific needs of the business the platform is deployed in. This capability significantly reduces integration time for new platforms and enables network operators to extend services to new subscribers swiftly and efficiently. By leveraging these features, service providers can accelerate service delivery, improve time-to-market, and effectively address the evolving requirements of their customer base.

The hardware itself featured in the Ciena 3960 is based around a modular design, with several redundancies built in, allowing for consistent network operation, even in the event of a technical fault or failure. These include hot-swappable elements such as swappable optic connectors and enhanced AC/DC dual power supplies for added reliability. In all this makes the Ciena 3960 a reliable and consistent platform.
