From ageing networks to operational constraints, the road to sustainability is long and complex, and it’s one TXO understands well.

In his recent feature for TechRadar Pro’s Sustainability Week, our Group CEO, Simon Wort, explores why telecom operators are struggling to balance sustainability goals with the practical realities of network transformation. Many of the networks in use today contain infrastructure dating back decades, equipment that is still in service, but increasingly inefficient and expensive to maintain.

Operators face a dilemma: invest in new, more energy-efficient technologies like fibre and 5G, or continue to service legacy infrastructure that drains financial and environmental resources. But this isn’t just a technical or economic issue, it’s a strategic one.

As Simon explains, circular economy approaches are now playing a critical role in solving this challenge. Through asset recovery, resale and responsible recycling, operators can reduce the environmental burden of decommissioning while unlocking commercial value. In some cases, the resale of materials like copper is not just sustainable, it’s profitable.

Sustainability isn’t only about what’s next. It’s about what we do with what we already have.
