SFP28 – a reliable 5G connectivity solution

Here at TXO we have been supplying our global customers with tested fronthaul or CPRI (Common Public Radio Interface) SFPs since 2014. Our range of fully tested optical transceivers are perfect for the mobile operator’s journey into eCPRI for 5G Fronthaul/Backhaul, as well as 25G Ethernet and Fibre Channel for DC applications.

The beauty of this form factor is that SFP28 offers low speed transceivers for 3G and 4G Radio Access Network (RAN) applications to transport baseband I/Q signals to the radio unit in the traditional BS (Base Station). With 5G now upon us and the growing profile of OPEN RAN where flexibility and open vendor use is premium, adoption of the advanced interface called Enhanced CPRI (eCPRI) will transform mobile networks as bandwidths will be at 100 MHz or more and the go between SFP from the RRU and BBU will require a speed of 20 Gb/s to 28 Gb/s.

As always, improvements in efficiency and flexibility drive the implementation of a step change, making it possible for operators to deploy wafer thin-waves of 5G while minimising the requirement for fibre.

eCPRI: the benefits

  • It improves bandwidth efficiency, increases capabilities and lowers latencies
  • Carriers can move from the baseband units to the radio allowing for simpler deployments of huge multiple-input-multiple-output for MIMO and increased flexibility
  • eCPRI can also be framed within Ethernet to take advantage of the networks already in place
  • Ethernet can carry from several system vendors at the same time
  • eCPRI can be used for administration, maintenance and troubleshooting of the network by controlling traffic scheduling and timing synchronisation

What is an SFP28 optical transceiver?

SFP28 stands for Small Form-Factor Pluggable 28. It is the third generation of the SFP interconnect systems designed for 25G performance. SFP28 utilises the same familiar form factor as SFP+, but the electrical interface is upgraded to handle 25Gbps per lane.
